BEGINNING KNITTING & BEYOND BEGINNING Pat Pennock, Instructor Beginning - Saturday, 9/20, 9/27 & 10/11, 10:00-12:00 In the past, knitting was the occupation of shepherds, sailors, 13th & 14th century guild apprentices and even royal knitters in the court of Henry VIII! Knitting basically uses only two stitches - the knit stitch and the purl stitch. Once you learn these two stitches, the possibilities are endless! In addition to basic knitting, such topics such as utilizing different knitting techniques, correcting mistakes, how to read patterns, and other related issues will be covered. BEGINNING CROCHET Elise Clason, Instructor Three sessions begin Friday, 9/26 or 10/24, 4:00-6:00 Crochet is all a matter of learning a basic single crochet stitch and building on it to make anything from great-grandma's lace to afghans, sweaters, skirts, and sturdy warm hats. The class will cover the various stitches that can be created along with how to read crochet patterns. $35.00 for three 2-hour classes plus cost of materials. RUBY SLIPPER TUESDAY Elise Clason, Instructor Tuesday from 4:00-6:00 Knitted Ruby Red Slippers - they'll cheer us up, tickle our fancy, and keep our feet warm. A fast and fun project for that last minute gift or when you want to create something special for yourself or someone you love. We have some gorgeous red yarns here at the Rose & Ram, and Elise is here to help you get started in choosing your palette and helping with your slipper design. CHINESE BLESSINGS MUG MAT Jan Johnson, Instructor Saturday, 12/13 & 12/20, 2:00-4:00 This class is a great introduction to reversible double knitting - a technique where both sides of the work are formed on the same row. The front side of the work is knit with your main color and the back of the work is purled with your contrast color. Students may choose one of four blessings to knit into their mug mat. SPYROGYRA Jody Buktenica, Instructor Tuesday, 10/21 & 10/28, 6:00-8:00 Also available Sunday, 4:00-6:00 by request Spyrogyra is a fingerless glove pattern that can be found on Knitty.com. The pattern was designed by Lynne Vogel, author of Twisted Sisters Sock Book and Twisted Sisters Knit Sweaters. Jody will explain the slanting shell stitch pattern and demonstrate how it spirals around in opposite directions on the opposite hands. The thumb stitches create a very natural position on the hand because of this spiral pattern. A sport or DK weight yarn is recommended. JONESY'S TOE-UP SOCKS Pat Pennock, Instructor Thursday, 11/6, 11/13 & 11/20, 6:00-8:00 Challenge yourself and learn to knit these cabled toe-up socks by Mountain Colors. Pat will teach the "fiddly" star toe technique. Recommended yarn is Mountain Colors' Bearfoot. $35.00 plus cost of pattern & materials RIBBONS AND RIDGES BABY JACKET Elise Clason, Instructor Wednesday, 10/1, 10/8 & 10/15, 5:00-7:00 Use knit, purl and 'yarn overs' to make an interesting sweater, with openwork for weaving in ribbon, if you so choose, for a baby or small child. Jody, Beth & I took this class and I can honestly say it was great! My sweater was knit with a double strand of Kraemer Yarn's Sterling Silk and Silver; Jody used Cascade's 220 Superwash; and Beth knit with Dark Horse Yarn's Fantasy. If you like Baby Surprise, you will love Ribbons and Ridges! Check out Elise's new sample knit with Cascade's Superwash Handpaint. EZ'S RIB WARMER Bobbie Dolp, Instructor Friday, 9/26, 10/3 & 10/17, 4:00- 6:00 This easy to make garter stitch vest is one of Elizabeth Zimmerman's most popular designs. A perfect slip-on for the Northwest in any season. This project is good for beginners as well as experienced knitters and is adaptable to many body shapes and sizes. The basic pattern can be modified in many ways to make a distinctive garment. You will want to make more than one! EZ'S NEW ZEALAND SWEATER Bobbie Dolp, Instructor Friday, 10/10, 10/24 & 11/7, 6:00-8:00 This class was a blast! Many of the New Zealand sweaters were worn to Elizabeth Zimmerman's birthday party on August 9th of this year at the Rose & Ram - all had their own characteristics. Yarn of choice was Peace Fleece hands down! Bobbie will cover short row shaping, making an underarm gusset and 'phony seams.' $35.00 for three classes plus cost of pattern and materials ROSEMARY'S CHILD SWEATER Jan Johnson, Instructor Sunday, 11/9, 11/16 & 11/23, 4:00-6:00 If you feel intimidated with the thought of knitting a sweater, this class is for you! Rosemary's Sweater is a very comfortable circular-knit pullover for the novice knitter. It features a simple roll neck and cuffs, and a basic cable along the armhole. Kits available in five different colorways. $35.00 for three classes plus cost of materials EZ's FAIR ISLE YOKE SWEATER Bobbie Dolp, Instructor Friday, 11/14, 12/5 & 3rd class to be decided later, 6:00-8:00 Here is the latest in the Elizabeth Zimmerman series. This sweater is knit in the round, bottom up and seamless with a yoke featuring fair isle designs. Based on Elizabeth's percentage system, this pattern allows you to make a garment for any situation. Skills to learn include circular knitting, short row shaping, grafting, making a hem and of course, stranding (fair isle). SOCKS ON CIRCS Jan Johnson, Instructor Thursday, 10/16, 10/23 & 10/30, 5:30-7:30 This is a brilliant technique which you may well have heard! Two circular needles are used to knit a sock. One half of the sock is worked off the points of one circular needle, while the other needle "rests", which creates just enough of a bend to give the working needles the angle they need. This technique can also be used for cuffs, hats and any other project calling for double-pointed needles. $35.00 for three 2-hour classes plus cost of materials.
